چکیده

The attentional scope model of rumination describes the links between rumination and attentional breadth. The model postulates that a more narrow attentional scope, caused by negative mood, increases the likelihood that thoughts become repetitive on the same topic, which in turn could exacerbate negative mood and lead to more attentional narrowing. We experimentally tested this model by examining the attentional effects of rumination using a newly developed ruminationversus problem-solving induction. In the first experiment we found that only at high levels of trait rumination, induction of rumination compared to a problem-solving approach was associated with more attentional narrowing for self-related information relative to other-related information. A second experiment on the relationship between trait rumination and attentional breadth in the absence of induced rumination, revealed that especially trait brooding was related to more narrowed attention for self-related information relative to other-related information.

The effects of rumination induction on attentional breadth for self-related information

Transdiagnostic mechanisms in depression and anxiety: The role of rumination and attentional control.

BACKGROUND Deficits in attentional control have been hypothesized to cause rumination, suggesting that the relationships between attentional control and clinical symptoms may be mediated in part by rumination. However, to date, no clinical study has examined these constructs transdiagnostically in a path analysis model. METHODS Fifty-one adults presenting for treatment completed measures of s...

The valence of attentional bias and cancer-related rumination in posttraumatic stress and posttraumatic growth among women with breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of self-reported attentional bias on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and posttraumatic growth (PTG) through the potential mediator of cancer-related rumination. DESIGN A cross-sectional survey design was used and women with breast cancer (N=170) were recruited. MEASURES Attentional biases, cancer-related ruminations, PTSD symptoms, and PTG were...

Brooding rumination and attentional biases in currently non-depressed individuals: an eye-tracking study.

Both rumination and attentional biases have been proposed as key components of the RDoC Negative Valence Systems construct of Loss. Although theorists have proposed that rumination, particularly brooding rumination, should be associated with increased sustained attention to depression-relevant information, it is not clear whether this link would be observed in a non-depressed sample or whether ...
